A new in-house steel profiling system has allowed steel services firm John W. Laycock to take their offering to the next level

Customers benefit from steel service firm’s new investment

The installation of a brand new in-house profiling system means that one of the UK’s leading providers of steel cutting, drilling and fabrication are now able to offer an even better service for their customers.

John W. Laycock has provided steel services to customers across the country since they were founded back in 1740. However they were keen to find a way to improve lead times, more closely manage quality control and reduce costs for customers when providing thermally cut profiles for fittings.

An improved and expanded service

In the past, this service was outsourced. John W. Laycock are continuing to work with their strong network of trusted suppliers – but now, with the installation of a state-of-the-art Ficep Kronos system, they are able to pass substantial benefits on to customers with this new in-house service.

The Ficep Kronos is a heavy-duty gantry style thermal cutting system that is specially engineered for steel fabricators. It has now been installed in John W. Laycock’s purpose-built building in Keighley, West Yorkshire, since being officially commissioned and signed off in July 2022.

New investment brings benefits for customers

Thanks to the new system, John W. Laycock is now able to provide an expanded offering for customers. Having the Ficep Kronos in-house means that whether the job is a one off, a repeat job, a single piece or multiple pieces, the firm can offer more competitive lead times, lower material handling costs and even better quality control.

“We are keen to grow on our successful foundation by offering this new service,” says Mark Sugden, John W. Laycock’s managing director. “Our existing system operators are stepping into a new challenge and we’ve taken on two new people to fill the gaps. We are confident we now have the right people and the right system to make the new service a great success.”

Investing in the purpose-built home for the new system also means that John W. Laycock are now able to move their materials even more safely at the site.
